Acknowledgements First and foremost I want to thank my advisor Prof. Andreas Hein. It has been an honour to be his Ph.D. student. He showed me, both consciously and unconsciously, how good engineering research is done. His contributions of time, ideas, and funding made my Ph.D. experience productive and stimulating. I also thank Prof. Dr. Steven van de Par for being my second advisor. His tips were a great help to this thesis. The first nine months of this work were supported financially by the graduate school of Neurosensory Science, Systems and Applications.
